Residents and commuters in the Builsa South District of the Upper East Region are raising urgent concerns over the apparent abandonment of the Uwasi-Fumbisi Road after what they describe as “substandard” construction by a politically connected contractor.
The 33.5-kilometer stretch, awarded on April 5, 2018, to the Northern Regional Chairman of the NPP through his company, Samba Co. Ltd., has become a source of frustration and hardship for the local community.
Initially constructed in 2019, just before the 2020 elections, the road was plagued by poor workmanship. Residents reported that culverts were washed away by heavy rains merely weeks after being covered with gravel, leaving the road in a perilous state.
Despite repeated appeals to the contractor to address these issues, residents say the site has been deserted since the substandard work was completed.
The Uwasi-Fumbisi Road is crucial for the residents of Uwasi, serving as the most direct route to the Fumbisi market and Jadema in the North East Region.
According to the Assembly Member for the Uwasi electoral area, Akusung Wisdom, its current state has severely impacted travel and trade, leaving the community feeling neglected. He expressed deep disappointment over the neglect and called on relevant authorities to intervene immediately.
The residents are demanding swift action from the government to ensure the contractor is held accountable and that the road is completed to a standard that meets the community’s needs.
However, the District Chief Executive, who also serves as the Parliamentary Candidate for the NPP in the area, Daniel Kwame Gariba, has yet to comment on the issue.
