The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Bongo Constituency has expressed strong displeasure towards the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for allegedly instigating the people of Bongo against the NDC following what the latter described as a “harmless joke” involving a goat adorned in NDC colors.
The incident, which took place during a recent event to welcome the NDC flagbearer, former President John Mahama, has sparked a political controversy in the region.
The incident involved an enthusiastic supporter who, in a light-hearted moment, dressed a goat in NDC colors and suggested that even if a goat were presented as the NDC parliamentary candidate, the people of Bongo would still prefer it over the NPP. This action, which the NDC insists was a mere expression of loyalty and humor, was reportedly misconstrued by the NPP as an insult to the constituents of Bongo.
In a statement signed by the NDC’s Constituency Communication Officer, Edward A. Asekere, the party condemned the NPP’s reaction, describing it as an attempt to create unnecessary tension and distract the public from the NDC’s achievements and ongoing efforts in the region.
“It is unfortunate that this harmless humor has been intentionally misconstrued by the NPP as an insult to the natives of Bongo, who have consistently supported the NDC. However, we are heartened that the NPP’s instigation has been rejected by the discerning natives of Bongo who see through their ulterior motives,” the statement read.
The NDC further accused the NPP of desperation and of seizing upon the incident as a tool for political gain, noting that the large turnout for John Mahama’s visit to Bongo had left the NPP in shock. The party suggested that the NPP’s press release condemning the incident was an indication of their fear and panic ahead of the 2024 elections.
The statement also took a swipe at the leadership of the Bongo District under the NPP, highlighting various issues, including an alleged disappearance of a tipper truck procured during the NDC regime, the depletion of district resources under the current District Chief Executive, and the lack of a presiding member in the District Assembly for the past three years.
The NDC called on the NPP to focus on addressing these pertinent issues rather than what they described as a trivial matter involving the goat. The party also took the opportunity to remind the constituents of Bongo of the numerous developmental projects undertaken by the NDC in the area, including the construction of schools, hospitals, and roads, and the extension of electricity under various NDC administrations.
