The Upper East Regional Youth Wing of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has strongly condemned the alleged unlawful arrest of several youth from Binduri by members of the Ghana Armed Forces.
According to the NDC, the arrests, which they claim were conducted on orders “from above,” have incited outrage among party members and the local community.
In a press release, Samson Samari, Deputy Regional Youth Organizer in charge of Operations, expressed his disapproval, stating, “We believe this action is intended to intimidate the youth from demanding a change in Binduri’s political leadership.”
Mr. Samari further alleged that Abdulai Abanga, the current Deputy Minister for Local Government and former Member of Parliament for Binduri, orchestrated the operation.
He accused Mr. Abanga of using the military to suppress opposition ahead of the December 7, 2024, elections, where he anticipates a loss.
The incident reportedly took place on August 12, 2024, when two armored vehicles from the Ghana Armed Forces allegedly stormed the homes of two individuals in Binduri.
The NDC claims that the individuals were assaulted before being transported to the military base in Bawku. One of the victims reportedly sustained serious injuries and was initially treated at Van Yard Hospital before being airlifted to an undisclosed location in Accra.
Samari emphasized that the Ghana Armed Forces’ role is to protect citizens, not to “torture innocent civilians” on the orders of higher authorities.
He called for the immediate release of the detained youth and warned that failure to comply would result in “stronger actions” from the NDC Youth Wing, as they remain committed to seeking justice for their comrades.
