PIAC criticizes delays in Bolgatanga-Naaga road project

Nana Kwaku Dei, a leading member of the Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC), has voiced serious concerns over the ongoing construction of the Bolgatanga-Naaga Road in the Upper East Region.

Despite being initiated in 2019, the 29.9-kilometer road project has seen minimal progress, raising questions about the efficiency of its management and supervision. Following an inspection visit, Nana Dei expressed his dissatisfaction, particularly with the Ghana Highway Authority, the supervising body.

“The famous Bolga-Naaga road, which started in 2019, is still ongoing in 2024. When you look at the work done so far, you would wonder what the supervising authorities, especially the Ghana Highway Authority, are doing. This 29.9-kilometer stretch has already cost the state GH¢18 million, yet the work done is something to wonder about,” Nana Dei remarked.

He suggested that if funding is the issue, the project should be completed in phases, such as constructing 10 kilometers at a time, to ensure better progress and accountability. This phased approach, he argued, could prevent the further wastage of resources and ensure that completed sections of the road provide immediate benefits to the local community.

Nana Dei’s comments were made during a media briefing as part of PIAC’s district engagement initiative in the Upper East Region. The committee’s visit aimed to inspect projects funded by the Petroleum Revenue and to educate local stakeholders on the proper use of the Petroleum Revenue fund.

Beyond the road project, Nana Dei also urged district chief executives to take greater responsibility for projects financed by the Petroleum Revenue. He emphasized that their active involvement is crucial for the successful and timely completion of these projects, ensuring that the communities receive the full benefits intended by the use of these public funds.
