BTU lecturer critiques NPP manifesto as “out of touch with reality”

Awineyesema Abiire, Assemblyman for Zorko Gamboringo in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region who doubles as a lecturer at Bolgatanga Technical University (BTU), has voiced sharp criticism of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) recent manifesto, questioning its practicality and relevance.

In a recent interview on A1 Radio, the lecturer expressed concern that the manifesto’s promises lack feasible and realistic content, likening it to the Dunning–Kruger effect—a psychological phenomenon where individuals with limited knowledge overestimate their competence.

Mr. Abiire drew an analogy to McArthur Wheeler’s infamous 1995 robbery, where Wheeler, believing lemon juice would make his face invisible to CCTV, demonstrated a profound misunderstanding of reality. He argued that similar cognitive biases may be affecting the NPP’s approach to governance.

He pointed out that the manifesto’s promises to cut and remove taxes without viable financial strategies are implausible and ignore the significant debts owed by various sectors, including NABCO beneficiaries, nursing and teacher trainees, and bondholders.

He criticized current political leaders for their apparent ignorance and mismanagement, which he believes has led to widespread economic issues, including debt and inflation. Mr. Abiire argued that rather than focusing on economic reforms and digitalization, Ghana needs urgent governance reforms to address systemic failures.

He criticized the Vice President’s promise to amend the Fiscal Responsibility Act, 2018, suggesting that without addressing broader governance issues, such amendments would be ineffective.

Abiire also expressed skepticism about the proposed credit system for acquiring goods, suggesting that it would burden citizens with debt rather than promote long-term financial stability. He concluded that the manifesto’s promises are out of sync with the country’s true needs, emphasizing the importance of aligning policies with practical solutions to address Ghana’s pressing challenges.
