The African Electoral Institute (AEI) is calling on all registered voters to verify their details during the provisional voter exhibition conducted by the Electoral Commission (EC). The exhibition runs from August 20 to August 27, 2024. This critical phase of the electoral process is designed to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the voter register for the upcoming 2024 general elections.
According to AEI, the “Provisional Voter Register Exhibition Exercise” serves multiple purposes. It allows voters to check their registration details for accuracy, providing an opportunity to amend any errors or omissions. It also involves removing deceased or ineligible voters from the register and ensuring that the register is accurate, complete, and reliable.
Joshua Nii Adjin-Adjin Tettey, Deputy Director of Communications and External Relations at AEI, emphasized the importance of this exercise: “The provisional voter register exhibition is essential for maintaining the integrity of the voter register. It helps prevent electoral fraud and enhances the transparency and credibility of the electoral process.”
AEI also highlights the convenience provided by the EC’s new short code service, *711* 51#, which allows individuals unable to visit polling centers to check their registration details from home or work. “We are pleased to see the EC implement this short code, making it easier for voters to verify their information without having to visit polling stations physically,” Tettey added.
In addition to urging voters to participate, AEI calls on all political parties, independent candidates, and their agents to engage fully in the process. “We urge political stakeholders to remind their supporters of the importance of this exhibition exercise and to ensure they verify their registration details,” said Augustus Eshun, Director of Communication and External Relations at AEI.
AEI has observed a lack of participation from many independent candidates and smaller parties. “We look forward to seeing increased involvement from these groups as the election approaches,” Eshun stated.
The organization also requests that the EC’s exhibition officers adhere strictly to their responsibilities and uphold their commitment to integrity. Furthermore, AEI advises security officers to be professional and impartial throughout the process.
As the provisional voter exhibition draws to a close today, AEI encouraged all eligible voters to take advantage of this final opportunity to verify their registration details and ensure a smooth voting experience on December 7, 2024.
