Students from CK Tedam – University of Technology and Applied Sciences (UTAS) are set to represent Ghana in an innovative competition in Kazakhstan this September. The competition aims to showcase problem-solving and innovative projects that contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Organized by ENACTUS, an international organization active in about 33 countries, the competition provides students, business professionals, and academics with a platform to develop social ideas that address critical issues.
The CKT-UTAS team has participated in both national and international competitions over the years.
In an interview on A1 Radio, David Amoak, President of the ENACTUS CKT-UTAS chapter, explained that this year’s participation is the result of three recent projects, two of which were merged. These projects include EcoHusk, which aims to convert rice husk and straw into environmentally friendly products, and CocoFert, a fertilizer project designed to enhance soil quality.
“EcoHusk has two phases: the first is BioWood, where we produced plywood using rice husk, and the second involves producing charcoal from rice straw. The second project, CocoFert, focuses on creating organic fertilizer that enriches the soil with nutrients such as NPK. Its main raw materials are coconut husks, eggshells, and banana peels, with a secret ingredient that we cannot disclose,” he said.
Regarding funding, Mr. Amoak mentioned that the university covers almost the entire cost of their trips. “Last year, the university funded nearly all of our expenses, and this year they are continuing their efforts to support us,” he said.
He also encouraged the public to support their efforts, emphasizing that the benefits extend beyond the university to the region and the nation as a whole. “We need public support to make a significant impact and represent our country effectively,” he added.
