Upper East Regional tourism sector needs local promotion – Regional Director

The Upper East Regional Director of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Wisdom Ahadzi, has highlighted a significant gap in the promotion of tourism in the region.

According to him, despite the rich cultural heritage and unique attractions in the Upper East Region, there has been a noticeable lack of concerted efforts by locals to promote these assets.

Speaking on A1 Radio, Ahadzi pointed out that one of the major issues hindering the growth of the sector is the lack of active participation by the residents themselves.

He expressed concern that even people living in Ghana’s national capital, Accra, struggle to recognize the unique cultural elements of the Upper East Region, including its traditional dance forms.

Ahadzi emphasized that this disconnect is partly due to the insufficient promotion of the region’s cultural identity by its own residents.

He shared these thoughts in connection with the upcoming Upper East Tourism Awards, scheduled for September 20, 2024.

The event is expected to recognize and honor individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the tourism sector in the region.

Ahadzi noted that the awards are not only an opportunity to celebrate achievements but also to inspire more proactive efforts in promoting the region’s tourism potential.

The Director called on the people of the Upper East Region to take ownership of their cultural heritage and work towards showcasing it to both national and international audiences.

He urged them to view the Tourism Awards as a starting point for a broader movement to establish the region as a prime tourist destination in Ghana.
