Dennis Apusika, a passionate vlogger and blogger, is on a mission to change the narrative surrounding his home region of Upper East Ghana.
Born in Bolgatanga and raised in Tema, Dennis has taken it upon himself to showcase the beauty and potential of his region, especially after observing the predominantly negative media coverage that often overshadows its rich culture and stunning landscapes.
In 2023, Dennis returned to Bolgatanga with a clear vision: to highlight the region’s attractions and connect with audiences beyond its borders.
“When social media emerged, I saw it as an opportunity to promote the Upper East Region’s beauty,” he told A1 Radio’s Portia Dogbe in an exlusive interview.
His content focuses on the unique stories each location offers, with a special mention of the Rock Gardens Eco-Village, a local initiative contributing significantly to tourism.
Dennis emphasizes the importance of supporting local tourism projects, believing they could attract more investors and stakeholders.
“Each site in the Upper East has its own charm,” he says, highlighting popular spots like the Paga Crocodile Pond, Pikworo Slave Camp, and Tongo Hills. However, he notes that infrastructure improvements, particularly road access, are essential for enhancing visitor experiences.
As September marks Tourism Month, Dennis is keen on creating content that resonates with current themes and audience interests. He often receives requests from viewers eager to see their hometowns featured, especially those living away from home.
Despite facing challenges, such as a frustrating experience when a caretaker turned off his phone before a scheduled visit, his passion remains unwavering. “My love for the Upper East keeps me motivated,” he asserts.
Engagement with his audience is a cornerstone of Dennis’s approach. Through compelling vlogs and articles, he has successfully shifted perceptions about the region. One notable instance was when a video he posted of Bolgatanga was mistaken for a location in southern Ghana.
When viewers learned it was in the Upper East, many decided to visit, revealing their surprise at the region’s offerings.
Looking ahead, Dennis is gearing up for “Operation December in Upper East Region,” a project aimed at spotlighting local events like the Feok Festival and the Naba Yeska Festival.
This initiative responds to the lack of endorsed events from the Upper East by the Ghana Tourism Authority. With Ghana generating $3.8 billion from tourism last year, Dennis believes it is crucial for the Upper East to claim its share of this revenue.
Through his dedication and innovative use of social media, Dennis Apusika is not just a vlogger; he is a beacon of hope for the Upper East Region, inspiring both locals and tourists to explore and appreciate its hidden gems.
