Dr. Mohammed Asaah, a senior lecturer at CKT-University of Technology and Applied Sciences (UTAS) and a development consultant, has emphasized the need to boost the economy of the Upper East Region through local development and tourism.
He highlighted the importance of strengthening the local economy to enhance the region’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and urged a shift in focus towards promoting local attractions rather than perpetuating negative narratives about the area.
Dr. Asaah is leading a tourism initiative, Rock Gardens, which aims to showcase the region’s natural beauty and potential. He noted that the Rock Gardens project is designed not just as a business venture but as a demonstration of conservation and development principles. “The Rock Gardens concept is not purely a business concept. It’s an attempt to prove a theory in the areas of conservation and nature,” he explained.
By preserving and managing the area’s natural trees and transforming what was once considered wasteland, the initiative, according to him, challenges preconceived notions and highlights the value of local resources.
He added that Rock Gardens, which is already attracting visitors, including families who appreciate the natural setting and educational aspects of the site, has future plans that include the addition of a waterfall, further enhancing the attraction’s appeal.
“These are some of the things we can develop using local resources. Development must be indigenous. We need to look within, see what is possible, value what we have, and not sell our resources cheaply,” he said.
Dr. Asaah advocated for a broader vision of sustainable development that prioritizes local resources and innovative thinking, aiming to transform perceptions and drive economic growth through tourism and conservation efforts.
