The Upper East Regional Hospital has provided 137 dialysis sessions and attended to 15 regular patients since the operationalization of its dialysis center on May 26, 2024, according to Dr. Adam Yussif, a medical officer at the hospital.
Dr. Yussif, who also serves as a clinician for patients at the center, said the center, has a capacity of 14 beds and operates three dialysis machines. However, Dr. Yussif revealed that two of the machines are currently out of order due to the overwhelming number of cases being treated at the center.
“The number of cases are overwhelming and the machines are unable to withstand the number and so we have faults with two of them and management is working to fix them,” he explained.
He was speaking to the media on Thursday when the hospital received a dialysis machine and consumables from Cardinal Namdini Mining Limited valued at GH¢466,505.00. Dr. Yussif commended the Talensi based mining company for their gesture. Dr. Yussif urged the public to prioritize their health by adopting healthy lifestyles, including regular exercise, adequate water intake, and routine kidney function tests.
Prior to the establishment of the center, patients with kidney diseases in the region were forced to travel to the Northern Region for treatment. Now, the Upper East Regional Hospital not only caters to patients in the region but also serves individuals from neighboring Burkina Faso.
The dialysis center’s services have been instrumental in providing much-needed care to patients in the region and beyond, alleviating the financial and physical burden of long-distance travel for treatment.
