The Health Services Workers Union (HSWU) is commemorating its 80th anniversary from September 2nd to 5th, 2024, with a series of events centered around the theme: “Achieving Universal Health Coverage: The Role of the Health Worker.”
The celebration included media discussions aimed at educating the public about the union’s history, achievements, and future goals.
As part of the festivities, the Regional Women’s Chair guided women through various income-generating activities, as well as activities for youth.
Originally founded in Takoradi, the union has remained committed to its core values of professionalism, discipline, unity, and integrity.
In an interview on A1 Radio, Angela Agambila Ayinne, Upper East Regional Chair of the union, highlighted that the union aims to recruit all paramedics within the health system to advocate for better working conditions and job security.
“Our mission is to recruit members from all sectors of the health system to negotiate for better conditions of service and job security,” she stated.
Members benefit from a welfare fund that provides support upon retirement, job transition, or in the event of death. Additionally, the union collaborates with Milife Insurance to offer insurance policies to all health staff.
“We have a welfare fund that supports every member who exits the system, whether by retirement or transitioning to another job outside the health sector. In the event of a member’s passing, we have a package in place. We also collaborate with Milife Insurance to provide insurance policies for all health staff,” she explained.
She expressed appreciation for members’ hard work and encouraged using appropriate channels to address challenges rather than blaming leaders. She also extended gratitude to union members for their continued support and dedication.
“I urge everyone to use appropriate means to resolve challenges and not to blame our leaders. In one way or another, we are all leaders in our own space. As we celebrate this week, I wish everyone strength and good health, and I pray that we remain inspired despite the hardships. Please continue supporting us,” she added.
