Government of Ghana through the Ministry of Roads and Highways has sealed a contractual agreement with Brazilian construction firm Queiroz Galvao to construct the 109 kilometers Bolgatanga-Bawku-Polimakom road in the Upper East region.

The agreement which was signed on behalf of Ghana government by the Roads and Highways Minister Hon. Inusah Fuseini has been in anticipation following President John Mahama’s series of assurances that work would soon commence to fix the trunk road which traverse through nine constituencies in the upper east region and a major transit road to neighboring Burkina Faso and Togo.

Speaking at a forum dubbed “Government for the People forum” in Bolgatanga, Thursday, Deputy Minister of Transport Mrs. Joyce Bawa confirmed the signing of the agreement and stated that the deal would see to the immediate start and completion of work on that road which would have a positive impact on various facets of development in the region including the speedy and convenient transportation of goods and foodstuff.

She added that the upper east region is Ghana’s land lock state and contributes to Ghana’s import and export of vegetables and the exportation of non-traditional products. This exportation gains some foreign exchange for the country that supports the country’s budgetary needs.

She mentioned that one of the President’s key drivers of the economy is to develop infrastructure, which will accelerate development in the industries, and drive the economic and socio-economic potentials.

“No nation can fully develop if we do not develop a fully complementary system of transport. The Ministry of Transport under the NDC government is not only developing the roads but also the aviation and maritime,” she said.

It is however unclear when the project is to be completed and how much it would cost though it would be funded under the road fund.
