The National Media Commission (NMC) has inaugurated a nine-member Media Advisory Committee in the Upper East Region to regulate and combat disinformation, misinformation, and hate speech within the media space.
This initiative is part of the Commission’s broader efforts to promote responsible journalism, especially in the lead-up to the 2024 elections.
The committee is composed of distinguished individuals with significant expertise in conflict resolution and advisory roles.
According to NMC Executive Secretary George Sarpong, the members were selected for their reputation and ability to mediate disputes and maintain trust in the media.
He highlighted their previous work and urged them to intensify their efforts before, during, and after the 2024 elections, emphasizing their vital role in safeguarding the media environment during this crucial period.
The committee is chaired by retired educationist Mr. Robert Ajene and includes notable figures such as Rt. Rev. Dennis Tong, the Anglican Bishop; Sir Alfred Ndago, former principal of St. John Bosco’s College of Education; lawyer Mr. Robert Bob Tater; and public relations expert Madam Ellen Gandaa.
Other members are businessman Mr. Pascal Ayarik; communications manager Mr. Clement Minyila; lecturer Dr. Helen Akolgo-Azupogo; and Mr. Godfred Polkuu, a journalist with the Ghana News Agency, who serves as the committee’s coordinator.
Mr. Ajene, the chairman, assured the NMC of the committee’s commitment to the cause, promising proactive measures to ensure peaceful and responsible media conduct.
The NMC also announced that the Ministry of Finance has provided funding support for its activities.
