The Audit Service of Ghana is calling on the public to help combat bribery, corruption, financial malfeasance, and poor service delivery by reporting such issues through the CITIZENSEYE application. The app, launched on May 21, 2019, aims to promote accountability in all sectors with the active support of citizens.
Speaking at a stakeholder engagement in Bolgatanga, Ebenezer Aglomasa, the Deputy Upper East Regional Auditor, emphasized the role of financial malfeasance in the country’s economic losses. He highlighted that public involvement can play a crucial role in curbing these practices.
“If the public sees anything that is untoward, they have to report it through the App, and if we are not the right authority to investigate, EOCO, CHRAJ, and others will take it up because we all know what is happening. Financial malfeasances are part of the irregularities that are going on and that is what the public must report on. Because auditors cannot be everywhere, we act upon leads,” he stated.
Ali Bashiru from the Controller and Accountant General’s Department praised the app for its anonymous reporting feature, which ensures informers’ identities are protected. Sarah Bamie, the Upper East Regional Director for the Fisheries Commission, also lauded the initiative, encouraging more people to use the platform to hold institutions accountable.
Prior to the stakeholder engagement, staff of the Upper East Regional office of the Audit Service Ghana embarked on a float on the principal streets of Bolgatanga to create awareness about the application. The staff extended its sensitization exercise through a radio discussion on A1 Radio in Bolgatanga.
