The Births and Deaths Registry in the Upper East Region has organized a practical workshop to enhance the skills of its officials and volunteers in using a mobile app for efficient data registration and uploading.

The workshop aimed to address the significant challenge of volunteers often struggling to accurately input and upload data they gather manually.

According to the Upper East Regional Registrar for the Births and Deaths Registry, John Yalmon Badengbanoya, the workshop was necessary to ensure the smooth transition from manual to digital record-keeping.

“The purpose of this training for my staff, particularly the volunteers, is to equip them with the skills to use the tablet and the software properly,” said Badengbanoya.

He explained that the volunteers play a crucial role in data collection, but without the necessary technical knowledge, their efforts might not yield the desired results.

“If they don’t have the skill with the tablet or the equipment they are using, it will not yield good results,” he added.

The mobile app allows volunteers to input data offline and then upload it once the device is connected to the internet. However, many volunteers were unaware of a critical step in the process, which led to incomplete uploads. Badengbanoya noted that there was a significant gap between the manually recorded data and what was uploaded to the system.

This gap highlighted the need for capacity building to ensure accurate data entry and uploads.

Despite the challenges, the director assured that the registry is on track to meet its annual targets, having already achieved 53% of its goal. The workshop is expected to improve overall data accuracy and efficiency in the region.

Some of the volunteers assured that the training would not only enhance their work but also allow them to network with colleagues from other districts.
