A group of young leaders from Kandiga, trained by the Green Africa Youth Organisation (GAYO) in Youth Climate Leadership, has organized its first community engagement event.
The engagement was with students from selected schools. The goal of the group was to share what they learned about climate change, menstrual hygiene, and safe sex education with the local community, focusing on both youth and parents.
The trainees began by discussing climate change, explaining its causes and effects on the environment. They emphasized the importance of taking care of their natural surroundings and shared practical steps the community could take, such as reducing waste and conserving resources.
Next, the conversation turned to menstrual hygiene. The trainees addressed common misconceptions and provided information on how to manage menstruation properly. They demonstrated how to use sanitary pads and discussed proper disposal methods. They also introduced the idea of reusable pads, highlighting their benefits for both health and the environment.
The final topic was safe sex education. The trainees explained the importance of understanding safe sex practices to prevent unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections. They discussed various protection methods, including condoms, and encouraged young people to consider abstinence until they felt ready.
The event concluded with a Q&A session, allowing community members to ask questions and share their thoughts. The trainees felt that the engagement was a valuable opportunity to educate their community and foster open discussions on these important topics.
