Women in Broadcasting is gaining momentum as it seeks to empower women and serve as a voice for the vulnerable in the Upper East Region. Established to connect women in media, the group is rapidly expanding and has set ambitious goals for the coming year.
Among its key initiatives, the association focuses on addressing critical issues affecting women and children. Members are actively engaging in discussions aimed at shedding light on both gender-specific and broader community challenges, ensuring that their platform amplifies those who are often unheard.
In an interview on the Equal Voices programme on A1 Radio, Josephine Akaribo, Vice President of Women in Broadcasting, announced the group’s plan to embark on a peace campaign ahead of the upcoming elections, emphasizing the importance of stability and harmony in the region.
Through discussions facilitated via radio and in-person outreach, they aim to foster understanding and promote peaceful conduct among community members. “Currently, we are embarking on a peace campaign that will span pre-elections, during the elections, and post-elections. We want peace; peace is paramount.”
As part of the group’s initiative plans, Madam Akaribo highlighted the introduction of reading clubs for students at the Junior High School and Senior High School levels, aimed at boosting their reading abilities. “We have a lot of programs lined up for the year. We discussed establishing reading clubs for our students, starting from Junior High to Senior High. This initiative is designed to encourage our younger generation to become more inclined toward reading. Reading is everything.”
In addition to their peace initiatives, Mrs. Gladys Apuweni, an organizer of the group, stated that Women in Broadcasting is prioritizing health awareness campaigns. She noted that plans are underway to conduct breast and cervical cancer screenings, particularly targeting youth and underserved communities. “We have other activities planned before the end of the year, including a breast cancer awareness campaign and screenings for cervical cancer, particularly for individuals in underserved communities.”
Following a successful collaboration last year, the association is determined to expand its efforts with the support of local leaders and businesses. “Last year, we partnered with Northern Media Ladies for a cervical cancer initiative, which saw a massive turnout and led to the detection of serious cases.
This time, Women in Broadcasting is launching a full project before the end of the year, with the help of our life patron, Madam Sophia Kumi, and our president, Mrs. Humul Khrusum Tahiru, along with Vice President Josephine Akanbo.”
With various programs scheduled throughout the year, the Women in Broadcasting Association is reaching out to the public for assistance. They believe that collaboration can make a lasting impact and invite community members to join their efforts in promoting health and peace in the region.
“We’ll be knocking on people’s doors for help, regardless of how much they can contribute—whether in cash or kind. We are reaching out to communities beyond Bolgatanga municipality,” she said.
As the association continues to grow, its members remain committed to uplifting the image of the Upper East Region while providing invaluable support and resources to those in need.
“If we can execute all the programs we have planned from now until the end of the year, I believe it will make a significant difference. We can’t do this alone; we need help from the general public. We need support from our chiefs, traditional leaders, politicians, and businesspeople—everyone, regardless of their background. Help us achieve these projects, so that at the end of it all, Ghana will smile, the Upper East will smile, and Women in Broadcasting will be proud of our accomplishments,” Mrs. Apuweni added.
Fauzia Abitor Haruna, a member of Women in Broadcasting, also urged the general public to reach out to organizers for any form of assistance, emphasizing that the peace campaign is open to everyone for participation.
