The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Bongo Constituency has condemned a viral video in which a young man, identified as Godwin Aduko, issued threats against the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate, Diana Aburiya.
In the TikTok video, the individual made death threats while holding a poster featuring images of both the NPP parliamentary candidate for Bongo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP flagbearer, urging the public to burn Madam Aburiya to ashes when she is seen campaigning in the constituency.
In a press statement, the NDC clarified that the individual’s actions were carried out in his personal capacity and had no connection to the party. The statement, signed by Edward Asekere, the NDC Bongo Constituency Communications Officer, strongly denounced Mr. Aduko’s comments, labeling them as “distasteful and condemnable.” The party emphasized that it does not endorse such behavior and advised its supporters to refrain from actions that do not benefit the party.
“We condemn the viral video and its content in the strongest terms,” the statement read. “We do not encourage such utterances, and we advise our support base that such acts will not be in the best interest of the NDC in the constituency.”
While condemning Mr. Aduko’s actions, the NDC also expressed disappointment with the NPP’s reaction to the incident. The party accused the NPP of attempting to link Mr. Aduko’s actions to the NDC parliamentary candidate, Lawyer Charles Bawaduah, and the party as a whole. During a press conference over the weekend, the NPP alleged that Mr. Aduko hails from the same electoral area as Lawyer Bawaduah, suggesting a connection between the two. However, the NDC refuted this claim, stating that Mr. Aduko is from the Tankoo Electoral Area, while Lawyer Bawaduah is from the Dasabligo Electoral Area.
The NDC described the NPP’s attempt to associate its candidate with the threats as “disingenuous” and “misleading.”
“The NPP’s claim that Godwin Aduko hails from the same electoral area as our parliamentary candidate, and their subsequent attempt to link Lawyer Charles Bawaduah to the condemnable act of Mr. Aduko, is completely false,” the statement continued. “Our checks with the electoral records have clearly shown that Mr. Aduko is from the Tankoo Electoral Area, while our parliamentary candidate is from the Dasabligo Electoral Area.”
The NDC further criticized the NPP for allegedly fabricating a claim that Lawyer Bawaduah made sexist remarks on A1 Radio, implying that women were less capable of winning the Bongo parliamentary seat. The NDC vehemently denied this allegation, challenging the NPP to produce evidence of the supposed statement.
“Lawyer Charles Bawaduah never made any such comments about the NPP candidate. Indeed, he respects and adores our mothers, wives, sisters, and aunties and would never seek to denigrate women,” the NDC stated, urging the public to obtain the recording of the interview to verify the truth.
In response to the NPP’s criticism of Lawyer Bawaduah’s contributions to the Bongo district, the NDC highlighted several of his achievements, including the establishment of the Samba Stars Football Club, the drilling of boreholes, and the donation of school uniforms and computers to public schools. The party emphasized his long-standing commitment to the development of the constituency, which includes providing free legal services and financial assistance to those in need.
The NDC concluded by urging the NPP to focus on constructive dialogue and meaningful contributions to the district rather than resorting to “unsubstantiated claims and distractions.”
