The Head of Legal Affairs for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Godwin Edudzi Tamaklo, has said that the flagbearer of the NDC is Ghana’s best bet for development.
Speaking on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show, Mr. Tamaklo explained that while former President John Mahama stated his commitment to solving the power crisis—a problem that persisted before his administration—he went ahead to address the issue comprehensively. Mr. Tamaklo added that this is a fact acknowledged by his current biggest contender, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“You can have a leader who plays semantics and engages in blame games, saying, ‘It wasn’t me; my predecessor did it.’ But John Mahama said, ‘As a leader, I will fix the problem.’ The person who testified to John Mahama solving the problem is none other than his major contender today, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.”
These considerations, Mr. Tamaklo said, would be taken into account by voters ahead of the December 7 polls.
John Mahama’s chances are further enhanced, according to Mr. Tamaklo, due to the retrogression experienced under the current government.
“When I say this country has retrogressed, it is not just Edudzi saying it. The Afrobarometer report on Ghana is not manufactured by the NDC. So when the Afrobarometer report states clearly that if you sample 10 Ghanaians, 8 out of 10 say the country is going in the wrong direction, that is not the change that was promised in 2016,” he said.
The Head of Legal Affairs added that while the NDC is confident of victory at the polls, it is doing everything it legitimately can to win by a resounding margin.
Earlier, Mr. Tamaklo had stated that the Electoral Commission (EC), led by Jean Mensa, is “strongly pro-NPP.” As such, the party is not convinced of the Commission’s ability to be fair to the NDC.
“If you have such a situation, you can’t leave anything to chance,” he added.
