As part of efforts to eliminate breast cancer, Eastside Life Hospital in Bolgatanga, Upper East Region, organized a two-day health screening for residents of Bolgatanga Sabon Zongo. The screening, which focused on various health conditions including breast cancer, high blood pressure, and diabetes, attracted a massive turnout, with over 700 people diagnosed with various ailments.

Out of the 151 women screened specifically for breast cancer, one breast lump was detected and referred for further diagnosis and treatment. The screening was conducted as part of the hospital’s Breast Cancer Awareness Week program, which aims to educate women about the dangers of breast cancer and encourage early detection.

Breast cancer, characterized by the abnormal growth of breast cells, can form tumors that spread if not detected and treated early. Early-stage detection, known as “in situ,” is not life-threatening, but invasive cancers can metastasize to other organs, posing serious risks. Treatment typically involves a combination of surgery, radiation therapy, and medications, depending on the severity and spread of the cancer.

For many women in Bolgatanga Sabon Zongo, this outreach provided a rare opportunity to access healthcare services. Several beneficiaries expressed gratitude to Eastside Life Hospital, citing financial challenges that often prevent them from seeking medical attention. They appreciated the screening and educational efforts, with many vowing to become ambassadors for breast cancer awareness in their communities.

“I didn’t know much about breast cancer until today. Now, I’ll help spread the word in my community,” said one participant.

The hospital’s breast cancer awareness campaign is ongoing, with several community outreach initiatives planned to reach more women, especially within the Bolgatanga Municipality. The goal is to increase early detection and improve health outcomes for women at risk.
