A health fair is set to take place in Bolgatanga, organized by the Northern Sector Action on Awareness Centre (NORSAAC), a non-governmental organization promoting health and social issues in Northern Ghana, in collaboration with the Ghana Health Service. The event aims to enhance community health awareness and provide access to essential services.
Scheduled for October 14-16, 2024, at Jubilee Park, the fair will offer a platform for various health actors to engage with the public. Attendees will have the opportunity to receive free health screenings, including blood pressure checks, diabetes assessments, and breast and cervical cancer screenings, in alignment with Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
“We will also conduct various screenings at the health fair. People will check their health status, including blood pressure and sugar levels, and all these services will be provided for free. We will also have breast cancer screenings, as this is Breast Cancer Awareness Month,” said Program Advisor Sumaila Mohammed.
In an interview on A1 Radio, Program Advisor Sumaila Mohammed explained that the initiative is part of the organization’s ‘Accelerating Social and Behavior Change Activity’ program, which aims to address prevalent health issues by fostering behavioral change in communities. “As part of our efforts to promote behavioral change, we identified that creating a platform to bring various health actors together would help make health services more accessible to the community.”
“We’ll have various health professionals on-site conducting these screenings and check-ups, and people will be able to access them,” he added.
He stated that the fair is expected to attract individuals of all ages, encouraging broad participation in the health services provided. “Regarding the target age group, we are actually aiming to serve the entire region. We hope to see people of all age groups accessing the services. Everyone is invited, and everything is free,” he said.
He emphasized the key role of the Ghana Health Service, which is leading the initiative alongside local health authorities and the Pharmaceutical Council, to ensure comprehensive support and resources are available. “The Ghana Health Service is leading the initiative. The regional health directorate is organizing the event, and as an NGO, our role is to support the Ghana Health Service in carrying out this initiative.”
The fair will also feature educational sessions covering topics such as family planning, nutrition, and water sanitation hygiene, with the goal of enhancing overall community health awareness. “There will be educational sessions where people can learn about family planning, and some may even sign up for services at the venue. We will also address issues related to nutrition,” he said.
