President of the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs Naba Sigri Bewong has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to assist with means of transport for some chiefs who are constrained in aid of their work.

According to him, some members of the house of chiefs are without means of transport, a situation he said is affecting their movement and dignity.

Naba Sigri Bewong made this appeal when president Mahama during his ‘accounting to the people’ tour in the upper east region on Tuesday paid a working visit to members of the regional house of chiefs in Bolgatanga.

“Today I had a very sad story of one of the paramount chiefs coming here who took a taxi and on his way the taxi veered off so he had to more or less remove his regalia and they managed to push the taxi back to road and he came, went to washroom, washed his shoes,” he narrated.

President Mahama in a response pledged to support the chiefs with means of transport to play their traditional roles.

“I have taken note of the issue of means of transport and then I will speak to the chief of staff and see how we can assist in that direction and so the chief of staff will get in touch with you the president and we will see how we can assist to resolve some of the issues that the chiefs are facing”.

A hall which houses paramount chiefs in the region for meetings for some time now has seen little or no renovation. The dilapidated structure which also serves as a conference center for corporate organizations leaks each time there is a downpour and has become an unbefitting structure to accommodate chiefs.

It is against this backdrop that the chiefs also appealed to the president to assist in renovating the structure.

“We the chiefs of the upper east region also want to appeal to you for the renovation of our office building. Estimates have been submitted through regional minister, regional minister, regional minister and we have not heard anything,” he stated.

The chiefs on the occasion commended the First lady’s outfit, Lordina Mahama’s foundation for donating a 12 seater Hyundai bus to queen mothers in the region.
