A legal practitioner and member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Lawyer Nana Obiri Boahen, has expressed deep concern over the potential negative impact the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo may have on Ghana’s international image and investor confidence.
Speaking on A1 Radio, Lawyer Obiri Boahen pointed out that while the President may have acted within the bounds of the constitution, the broader implications of such decisions on Ghana’s democratic image and economic stability cannot be overlooked.
“No serious investor will love to come to Ghana based on what the President is doing about the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo,” he noted. “If you look at the way and manner some international media have reported the issue, it is a shot on the face of the country and it is not good.”
The seasoned lawyer was quick to clarify that his concerns were not about the legality or otherwise of the President’s action but about the optics and the difference between what is lawful and what upholds the spirit of constitutionalism.
“There’s a difference between the constitution and constitutionalism. You can resort to constitutional means to handle an issue, but that does not always guarantee the end result reflects the true essence of the rule of law,” he explained.
He emphasized that constitutionalism is not just about following legal procedures but ensuring justice is done in a manner that sustains public confidence in democratic institutions.
