Fauzia Haruna, a member of Women in Broadcasting, says the contribution of women in peacebuilding cannot be overstated. She emphasized that women are often the first line of communication in maintaining peace within their households.
She pointed out that mothers, in particular, hold significant influence over the behavior of their children and husbands, guiding them away from violent conflicts.
“The role of a woman in promoting peace cannot be underestimated. A woman can convince her children not to engage in activities that would lead to violence. Women can also talk to their husbands and other male counterparts in their lives, encouraging them to avoid violence. This is why the role of a woman is very, very important.”
According to Madam Haruna, women’s voices have a unique power, often characterized by warmth, empathy, and a persuasive tone, which can influence both their children and male counterparts. She believes this makes them uniquely positioned to advocate for peace, even in communities where tensions may run high.
“Women, by nature, are so powerful. Their voices carry charisma and persuasiveness. They are able to use a particular language to convince their children, husbands, and other male counterparts in their lives.”
While acknowledging that men may be deeply involved in the political and social issues surrounding elections, Madam Haruna stressed that women have a unique capability to bridge divides and communicate the importance of non-violence.
She also expressed concern over the role some women play in perpetuating violence, noting that some women may inadvertently support violent actions by their male counterparts, either by encouraging aggressive behavior or failing to intervene when tensions escalate. Addressing this issue, she called on women to take a more active stance against violence, reinforcing the idea that their voices can help prevent destructive behavior.
As part of their ongoing efforts to promote peace, Madam Haruna and Women in Broadcasting are preparing for their next peace campaign, which will take place in Bolgatanga Municipal and Bolgatanga East. She urged the women in these areas to join the campaign, reiterating the importance of unity and collective action in ensuring a peaceful electoral process.
The radio discussion was funded by the Media Foundation for West Africa through its “Countering Hate Speech and Polarising Narratives to Foster Democratic Consolidation and Peace in Ghana” project.
The project aims to support radio stations in sensitizing the public and contributing to an enhanced culture of tolerance, harmony, peace, and information hygiene. It promotes inclusive social and political discourse by discouraging polarizing and toxic narratives, particularly in the context of the 2024 elections.
