Albert Dwumfour, President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), has underscored the importance of journalists’ work and safety as Ghana approaches its December 7th elections.
Mr. Dwumfour emphasized that journalists play a crucial role in ensuring accurate, unbiased information reaches the public, which is essential for maintaining a transparent and credible election process.
Speaking at a two-day advanced course on disinformation and fact-checking in the 2024 election process, hosted by the Spanish Embassy on November 13, 2024, Mr. Dwumfour stated that journalists have a constitutionally mandated duty to shape the election narrative. This duty includes ensuring that readers, listeners, and viewers are well-informed to make educated decisions at the polls.
Mr. Dwumfour addressed the growing threat of misinformation and disinformation, warning that it could undermine Ghana’s democratic process. He noted that both social media and traditional media face challenges from false information, with political entities often accused of exaggerating achievements or spreading discrediting claims.
“Disinformation can be used to deceive and manipulate voters, thereby eroding confidence in our elections,” he cautioned.
He highlighted the necessity of fact-checking as a tool to counter these issues, helping journalists uphold transparency and accountability.
As “gatekeepers of information,” Mr. Dwumfour urged journalists to not only report facts but also to provide context and analysis. He stressed the importance of working with reputable fact-checking organizations and remaining vigilant against sources with vested interests.
“Fact-checking is crucial, and it is essential to verify information before sharing it, especially during elections,” he said. “It is the only sure way to avoid falling prey to disinformation.”
Spanish Ambassador Ángel Lossada-Torres Quevedo reaffirmed Spain’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s media through training initiatives like this one, expressing hope that it would raise journalistic standards among participants and contribute positively to Ghana’s democracy.
The program was organized in collaboration with CASA Africa, the GJA, and the Spanish Embassy.
