The Millar Institute for Transdisciplinary and Development Studies (MITDS), located in Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region, has celebrated its 10th anniversary, marking a decade of innovative research, academic excellence, and community engagement.
The colorful event, held at the institute’s main campus in the Yikine community, brought together scholars, researchers, students, and stakeholders to reflect on its achievements and future prospects.
The Council Chairman of MITDS, Naa Ganglaar-Bog-Belagr Tater V, called on the public to patronize the institute’s programs, which range from first-degree courses to PhD programs. He also appealed for infrastructure support from the government and other agencies.
“All that you see in terms of infrastructure was funded from internal sources. Since 2014, there has not been a single dedicated financial backing, neither from any government nor from any donor agency. If we want MITDS to do more, they will need support for a library complex and an administration block, both of which, I am reliably informed, have their drawings and land space ready and waiting,” he stated.
He added, “The Council pledges to support the agenda to solicit a response from the government through GETFund or similar financial support to execute these projects. We will also reach out to donors and philanthropists to come to the aid of MITDS.”
Affiliated with the University for Development Studies (UDS), the Vice-Chancellor of UDS, Professor Seidu Alhassan, was represented at the event by Dr. Yazeed Abdul-Mumin. Dr. Abdul-Mumin expressed great excitement about the progress of MITDS over the past decade.
“I feel very honored once again to be associated with the sixth graduation ceremony of MITDS, which coincides with the 10th anniversary of the institute. I have followed the development of this institute with keen interest and support, as it is an offshoot of UDS. It was therefore natural for UDS to be its mentoring institution. In plain language, *this is our baby,*” he said.
The 10th-anniversary celebration also featured the 6th graduation ceremony of the institute, during which eight PhD and six MPhil holders graduated. Professor Dr. David Millar, President of MITDS, expressed his gratitude to stakeholders for their contributions to the growth of the institution over the past decade.
As part of the celebrations, two honorary doctorate degrees were conferred on Madam Lydia Mamata Bawah Millar and Dr. Salifu Yakubu in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the university and society at large.
The Upper East Regional Minister, Dr. Hafiz Bin Salih, commended Professor Millar for establishing MITDS in Bolgatanga, describing it as the most committed and credible private tertiary institution in Northern Ghana.
