As part of efforts to meet emerging educational needs and address critical gaps in the Free Senior High School programs, the Millar Institute of Transdisciplinary and Development Studies has announced its intention to introduce a Pre-Diploma Program.

According to the President of the institute, Professor David Millar, the institute has identified significant challenges faced by some senior high school graduates with commendable grades (A’s and B’s) who are unable to progress due to deficiencies in mathematics and/or English. This prompted the decision to launch the one-year Pre-Diploma Program.

The program, which includes credit points, is designed as a bridge for students aspiring to enroll in diploma programs.

“One critical need we have identified in consultation with our stakeholders is the problem of SHS graduates with excellent grades (A’s and B’s) who are staying at home because they lack mathematics and/or English. This cohort numbers in the thousands, with some having re-sat those exams multiple times. We are about to launch a specially designed Pre-Diploma One-Year Program that will award academic certificates with credit points,” stated Prof. Millar.

Additionally, the Pre-Diploma Certificate may open alternative pathways to employment for participants, offering hope to many who would otherwise be left behind. Prof. Millar also highlighted the social impact of the program, particularly its focus on keeping adolescent girls in school longer.

“The student will also have an additional Pre-Diploma Certificate to complement their SHS certificate, which may open doors to future employment. It will keep adolescent girls in school longer, thus reducing the prevalence of teenage pregnancies among school dropouts. This will be our unique initiative, contributing to the Free SHS Program,” he explained.

The tenth-anniversary celebration of the institute also marked the 6th graduation ceremony, featuring eight (8) PhD and six (6) MPhil graduates.
