The Millar Institute for Transdisciplinary and Development Studies (MITDS) has conferred Conjoint Honorary Doctoral Degrees (Honoris Causa) on two distinguished individuals for their invaluable contributions to the institute’s establishment and their broader societal impact. The honors were presented during the institute’s tenth-anniversary celebration.

The honorees, Mrs. Lydia Mamata Millar and Architect Salifu Yakubu (PhD), were celebrated in a special ceremony that highlighted their significant roles in advancing education, humanity, and development.

Mrs. Lydia Mamata Millar was praised for her unwavering commitment to humanitarian causes and her dedication to promoting access to higher education. Her pivotal contributions began with the acquisition of the land that now houses the institute’s campus. Her efforts have since laid the foundation for countless academic opportunities, cementing her as an integral figure in the institute’s history.

Architect Salifu Yakubu was honored for his exceptional career in architecture, spanning over three decades, and his philanthropic achievements. As the founder of Memarie Global Associates (MGA), Yakubu has been involved in landmark projects such as the redevelopment of the Tamale Central Hospital and the Gbwewa Palace Redevelopment Plan. His humanitarian contributions include joining 125 Rotarians in 1996 to donate $500,000 towards polio eradication in Africa, alongside other significant philanthropic initiatives across Ghana, particularly benefiting the Muslim community.

Delivering a speech on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor of the University for Development Studies at the event, the speaker commended the awardees and urged them to leverage their extensive networks to further support the growth and aspirations of MITDS.

The honorary degrees symbolize the institute’s recognition of exceptional service and impact, inspiring others to contribute to education and development in Ghana.
