A team from A1 Radio, the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), the Upper East Regional Peace Council, and Women in Broadcasting recently visited Gambibgo Senior High School to engage students on the importance of countering hate speech and polarizing narratives.
The session aimed to promote democratic consolidation and peace in Ghana ahead of the general elections.
Addressing the students at the event, the General Manager of A1 Radio, Ebo Bruce Quansah, urged them to adopt constructive language in political discussions, noting that inflammatory remarks often cause unnecessary division.
He explained that while it is natural to have differing political views, it is crucial to express them in a manner that fosters unity and national development.
“We are here to encourage you and sensitise you on the need for us to use very civil language for ourselves while we campaign and talk for our various political parties,” he said.
Mr. Quansah highlighted the significant role of the media in shaping public opinion, educating citizens, and contributing to the country’s growth. He emphasized that media outlets must be properly trained to fulfill their roles responsibly.
Acknowledging the influence of the media, he warned of the potential dangers posed by irresponsible reporting, which could lead to unrest and affect the entire nation.
“If the media has these roles to play, then it means that we have to be trained and empowered to do it right. If we don’t do it right and the media gets us into trouble, at the end of the day, maybe just one radio station, just one newspaper, just one online platform will cause a small chaos, and then it will spread throughout the country. At the end of the day, we’ll all suffer,” he said.
He encouraged participants to share the knowledge gained from the event and educate others, creating a ripple effect that could lead to more informed and respectful political engagement across the country.
“Once you are able to understand what you are educated on, you will send it back home and educate other people, and it’ll help us all in the future,” he added.
This initiative was part of a collaborative effort between the station and the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA). The project, titled Countering Hate Speech and Polarizing Narratives to Foster Democratic Consolidation and Peace in Ghana, aims to strengthen the electoral process by promoting tolerance and responsible information sharing.
The project seeks to educate the public on the importance of peaceful political discourse, counter divisive and toxic narratives, and foster inclusive dialogue, especially during the election period. It contributes to the broader goal of consolidating Ghana’s democracy and ensuring a peaceful electoral environment.
