The Binduri MP-elect, Issifu Mahmood of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has spoken about his victory over the incumbent MP, Abdulai Abanga of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
In an exclusive interview with Humul Khrusum Tahiru during A1 Radio’s special election coverage, Mr. Mahmood, a private legal practitioner, explained that a major part of the party’s strategy was to remind voters of the NPP’s failures.
“I have witnessed what the NDC government did in 2016. When it comes to rural electrification, and after we lost the election, the NPP had all the resources to continue, but as we speak, some of those poles are still waiting for electrical wires. If you look at our roads, there is nothing. This is the only seat the NPP held, and yet there is no development. You can’t see anything here.”
“The only thing this man [the outgoing MP] would say is that he has constructed boreholes. When it comes to employment, you cannot count the number of young people he has lobbied for to get government jobs. We took our time to go to the ground and explain these issues to the people,” he said.
Mr. Mahmood also commended the voters in the Upper East Region for their decisive support in securing victory for the NDC.
One of Mr. Mahmood’s top priorities is to help connect all communities that have not yet been linked to the national grid for electricity.
Issifu Mahmood of the NDC defeated the incumbent Binduri MP, Abdulai Abanga of the NPP, with Mr. Mahmood securing 21,943 votes compared to 7,811 votes for the incumbent. These results were based on provisional data obtained by A1 Radio.
