Issifu Mahmood of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) defeated the incumbent Binduri MP, Abdulai Abanga, of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the December 7 polls.
Mr. Mahmood secured 21,943 votes, while the incumbent polled 7,811 votes.
According to the NDC’s Upper East Regional Communication Officer, Jonathan Abdallah Salifu, the victory demonstrates that a united NDC in the Binduri Constituency is unbeatable.
Speaking to A1 Radio’s Mark Smith, Mr. Abdallah Salifu explained that the NDC had only lost the seat on occasions when internal divisions had weakened the party’s ranks.
“We knew we would win Binduri, but the margin came as a surprise. I have always said, whenever we are united in Binduri, nobody can defeat us. Except for God, it doesn’t matter who you are—when you come, we will floor you,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Simon Akibange Aworigo of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been elected by voters in the Navrongo Central Constituency of the Upper East Region, securing a decisive victory.
He defeated Alhaji Otito Achuliwor of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) with 26,190 votes to 12,203 votes, giving him a nearly 14,000-vote margin.
Commenting on the impressive victory, the NDC’s Upper East Regional Communication Officer, Jonathan Abdallah Salifu, praised the efforts of Mr. Aworigo and the constituency executives. He highlighted the party’s satisfaction with the commanding win, emphasizing that while they were confident of a victory, they did not anticipate such a wide margin.
“The candidate kept assuring us that he was going to win with a big margin. But you know, sometimes when you hear complaints from people, you get worried and feel the need to step in and help. But he knew what he was doing, and I must give him a lot of credit,” Mr. Salifu said.
Despite Mr. Aworigo’s confidence, the party took no chances. Mr. Salifu explained that the NDC had to “invade” the Navrongo Central Constituency, providing extensive support to bolster the candidate’s campaign.
