John Quarshie, the Regional Public Relations Officer (PRO) for the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), has emphasized that electric bicycles should not be treated the same as motor vehicles, stressing that cyclists, whether on electric or regular bikes, are not classified as motorists and should avoid using the main roads meant for motor and car traffic.
Speaking on A1 Radio, he urged cyclists to stick to designated areas for pedestrians, as these parts of the road are safer and should be followed to avoid any potential accidents with motors and other vehicles.
The road safety expert also addressed the importance of pedestrians maintaining the proper position on the road. He reminded individuals that when using the pedestrian road, they should always face oncoming traffic. This, he said, is essential for visibility and ensuring that pedestrians can react if any danger arises. To stay safe, pedestrians must walk on the left side of the road; walking on the right side puts them at unnecessary risk, Mr. Quarshie warned.
“Riding an electric bicycle doesn’t make you a motor rider or a motorist. You are known for cycling. You have nothing to do on the main road. There’s a place demarcated for pedestrians and that’s where you must go. You must apply and also take into consideration the pedestrian rule.”
He also encouraged parents to take responsibility and educate their children about road safety, particularly when it comes to electric bikes. Mr. Quarshie reiterated that these bikes should not be mistaken for motorbikes, highlighting the importance of understanding their limitations. “Parents, talk to your children. That electric bicycle is not a motorbike.”
Additionally, he recommended that both children and adults wear helmets while riding electric bikes to reduce the risk of injury in case of an accident.
