As the festive season approaches, the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) is urging the public and food businesses in the Upper East Region to exercise heightened vigilance in food safety practices. Abel Ndego, Acting Regional Head of the FDA, emphasized that safeguarding food safety during this period requires a multifaceted approach, with a strong focus on sourcing quality raw materials and maintaining proper environmental standards.
Speaking in an interview on A1 Radio, Mr. Ndego highlighted the critical importance of acquiring safe and high-quality food ingredients. He noted that the quality of raw materials is fundamental to ensuring food products meet health and safety standards. “To ensure food safety, there are a number of things you need to consider. One very critical factor is the acquisition of raw materials,” he stated.
Concerns Over Agrochemical Usage
Mr. Ndego expressed concern about the increasing use of agrochemicals, particularly in vegetable cultivation, and the potential health risks posed by improper handling. He explained that good agricultural practices require a “recall period” between the application of agrochemicals and harvesting, allowing plants to process the chemicals and convert them into safer compounds.
“Another worrying issue these days is chemical residue, especially in vegetables. As part of good agricultural practices, the expectation is that when you apply agrochemicals to your produce, you are supposed to allow what we call a ‘recall period.’ This period allows the plants to assimilate the chemicals and convert them into safer forms so that, when consumed, they do not pose health challenges,” he explained.
However, Mr. Ndego noted that some farmers are failing to adhere to these guidelines, harvesting produce too soon after pesticide application and sending it to market before it is safe for consumption.
FDA’s Commitment to Public Health
He stressed that the FDA’s top priority is protecting public health. As part of its mandate, the Authority works to prevent non-compliant products from reaching the market. He reassured consumers that the FDA remains committed to ensuring all products sold meet the required safety and quality standards, especially during the holiday season when food consumption typically increases.
“Our priority is to prevent people from accessing non-conforming products. Anything we believe has the potential to threaten public health becomes our primary concern. We will always ensure that products entering the market meet quality and safety standards,” Mr. Ndego emphasized.
