President-elect John Dramani Mahama has officially tasked the parliamentary leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) with nominating the Right Honourable Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin as Speaker for the 9th Parliament of Ghana’s Fourth Republic. This announcement follows calls for experienced leadership in the face of a complex political climate.
Speaking on A1 Radio, political analyst Ayam Fidelis Atura expressed strong support for Speaker Bagbin’s nomination. He highlighted the Speaker’s impressive track record as a parliamentarian, emphasizing his ability to prioritize the nation’s democratic values over political affiliations.
Mr. Atura praised Bagbin’s leadership during the previous parliament, noting his remarkable consistency in balancing political dynamics and fostering a cooperative environment. “I think he will perform based on what he believes is good for Ghana’s democracy,” he said.
Reflecting on the challenges the Speaker may face due to the overwhelming majority in parliament, Mr. Atura expressed confidence in Bagbin’s ability to navigate the complexities of the upcoming legislative term. According to him, Bagbin’s history of impartiality will enable him to maintain fairness and credibility, even in a potentially divided parliament. “He wants to build a sustainable system that reflects democracy going forward,” he added.
The political analyst believes the NDC has rightly recognized the Speaker’s capacity to strengthen parliament and contribute positively to Ghana’s democratic processes. Bagbin’s leadership style, focused on unity and democratic integrity, is expected to be pivotal in the next parliament.
“We look forward to seeing him maintain the credibility he demonstrated in the hung parliament, working to find balance rather than creating confusion. I strongly believe he will excel as the Speaker of the 9th Parliament, based on the experience he has shown. While the task will be challenging, I am confident he will succeed,” Mr. Atura concluded.
