The Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG) has urged the newly inaugurated government of President John Dramani Mahama to prioritize an audit of the Pwalugu Multi-Purpose Dam. In a congratulatory press statement, the association called on the government to address issues of accountability surrounding the dam, which they allege was mismanaged by the previous administration.
According to PFAG, the Pwalugu Multi-Purpose Dam has the potential to significantly mitigate the impacts of climate change and boost Ghana’s agricultural GDP by an additional 20% to 30% if properly managed. “However, the dam has been used as an avenue for extortion by the previous regime without accountability,” the statement alleged.
Citing the Mahama government’s commitment to transparency through the “Operation Recover All Loot” (ORAL) initiative, PFAG encouraged the administration to conduct a thorough audit of the dam project. The National President of PFAG, Wepia Awal Adugwala, who signed the statement, urged the government to recover any illegal funds linked to its mismanagement and reallocate them for national development.
“Recognizing that an audit of the Pwalugu Multi-Purpose Dam is part of your agenda to ensure accountability under the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL), we urge you to ensure that any illegal funds are recovered and returned to the state. Additionally, we request a budgetary allocation to commence construction of the dam within your first 120 days,” the statement read.
PFAG also congratulated President Mahama on his emphatic electoral victory, describing it as a reflection of the aspirations of the Ghanaian people. The association expressed optimism about his administration’s ability to revitalize the agricultural sector, citing his background as a farmer and his commitment to agro-economic transformation.
“As farmers, we are encouraged by your understanding of the agricultural sector, evident from your engagements with key stakeholders during your campaign, including PFAG. We are confident that your personal experiences, combined with honest input from stakeholders, will drive the success of your initiative for agro-economic transformation and your vision for a 24-hour economy,” PFAG added.
The association highlighted the significant challenges the agricultural sector has faced in recent years, including poor performance and systemic inefficiencies. They expressed confidence in the Mahama administration’s ability to address these issues and implement meaningful reforms to support farmers across the nation.
