Osafo-Maafo’s Leadership Style Needed in Ghana Sports – Joseph Nkoo to Mahama

Joseph Nkoo, the Accra Representative of Berekum Chelsea FC, has voiced concerns over President John Mahama’s recent decision to restructure the Ministry of Youth and Sports into two distinct entities: the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.

While he acknowledges the potential benefits of this restructuring, Joseph has cautioned that appointing party loyalists with no expertise in sports could hinder the growth of Ghana’s sports industry.

Speaking on A1 Radio, Joseph emphasized that appointing individuals without a deep understanding of sports management could pose significant challenges for the sector. He urged President Mahama to be critical in his appointments, pointing to the leadership of former Sports Minister Osafo-Maafo as a model of effective governance.

“Leaders like Osafo-Maafo, who worked tirelessly to secure sponsorships and contributed to Ghana’s qualification for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, are what the country needs,” he remarked.

Joseph called on the President to prioritize experience and knowledge in sports when selecting heads for the newly formed ministries. He believes that, if managed effectively, the restructuring has the potential to significantly benefit Ghana’s sports sector.

The division of the ministry could lead to increased budget allocations for sports, he argued, which would help address persistent challenges within the sector.

“It will go a long way to cater to some of the things often lacking in the sporting industry. In Ghana, we don’t lack policies to improve sports but rather the zeal to implement them,” he stated.

The Berekum Chelsea FC representative also referenced various initiatives, such as the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), acknowledging that while these programs are well-intentioned, their weak implementation often undermines their potential impact.

“If the President appoints people with experience in the sector and a drive for investment, the country’s sports sector will thrive,” he added, expressing hope that the new appointments would breathe new life into the industry.

A key area Joseph highlighted was the state of the Ghana Premier League (GPL), which he described as “valueless and sponsor-less.” He stressed that prioritizing the development of the GPL would be crucial for the future of football in Ghana.

“The Ghana Premier League needs to be nurtured into a thriving competition that can attract sponsorships and contribute to the national sports agenda,” he emphasized.

He, therefore, urged the President to be strategic in his decisions, ensuring that the right individuals with the requisite experience and vision for the sports industry are appointed to lead the new ministries.

With the right leadership, Joseph believes Ghana’s sports sector can flourish and achieve its full potential.
