Kenneth Singah, the Public Relations Officer of Cassius Mining Limited, has expressed cautious optimism over the nomination of Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine as Ghana’s Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Designate.

Dr. Ayine, a former lawyer for the Australian gold mining company, is expected to oversee legal affairs for the state, including a high-profile $440 million arbitration case filed by Cassius Mining Limited against the Government of Ghana.

In an exclusive interview with A1 NEWS, Mr. Singah noted that Dr. Ayine’s familiarity with the genesis of the dispute could pave the way for a fair resolution.

“Dr. Ayine knows the genesis of the case—how we got here and the challenges involved. If he becomes the AG, we are quite happy with that because he knows the beginning of the case. It is not now that someone will have to narrate to him because he was involved in the beginning. So we expect that there will be a fair judgment on it,” he stated.

Cassius Mining Limited filed its claim at the London Court of International Arbitration, alleging that the government’s decision not to renew its prospecting license in 2019 had denied the company the full value and profits of its gold project in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region.

Mr. Singah revealed that Cassius Mining Limited is open to settling the case out of court should Dr. Ayine pursue such an option. “If he comes and wants to settle it, we are in for settlement,” he said.

The PRO highlighted the company’s initial intentions of creating jobs and economic opportunities for the youth in Northern Ghana, emphasizing the negative impact of the dispute.

“We came to the Talensi District to create jobs and employment for the people of Northern Ghana. We had so many people employed in the company, and if that happened and we had to lay off people, and now, the current government is saying they want to help people with a 24-hour economy to solve the unemployment problem. If he [Dr. Ayine] can resolve it and we come and do our work and employ people, that is very good,” Mr. Singah added.

While a member of Parliament’s Vetting Committee raised concerns about a potential conflict of interest due to his previous role as Cassius Mining Limited’s lawyer, Dr. Ayine assured the Committee of his dedication to upholding the interests of the Republic of Ghana if confirmed as Attorney-General.
