Political analyst urges caution amid growing election divisions in Ghana

Political analyst Ayam Fidelis Atura has expressed concerns over increasing political divisions in Ghana, warning that the country could face violent confrontations during elections if current trends persist.

Speaking during an interview on A1 Radio, Mr. Atura highlighted the growing divide between supporters of the two major political parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He noted that this division appears more pronounced now than ever before.

According to him, escalating tensions, particularly along regional lines, could lead to violent clashes between party supporters in the future. He urged caution and stressed the need to address the root causes of these political conflicts before they worsen.

“If elections become a way for people to fight among themselves, a means of disagreement causing conflict, and we don’t solve it, then there’s a likelihood it will create a civil situation. You may find NPP members in the Ashanti Region attacking NDC members, and in the Volta Region, NDC members attacking NPP members. This dynamic could generate systemic violence, and I think we need to approach our elections with care.”

Mr. Atura also called for a thorough investigation into issues surrounding elections, particularly those from the 2020 polls. He emphasized the importance of resolving these matters to ensure peace and stability.

He expressed concern about the growing tendency among young people to adopt an “anything goes” mentality, driven by the belief that their party’s victory grants them a free pass to act with impunity.

He further warned that such attitudes degrade political discourse, shifting the focus from constructive engagement to a “win at all costs” mentality. The political analyst advocated for a cultural shift where elections are seen as a democratic process, ensuring that no one loses their life in pursuit of political power.

“I believe the growing tendency among young people to think, ‘Our party is in power, so we can do whatever we want,’ is creeping into our society. This mindset is why politics has become chaotic in many situations, where people believe they must win at all costs,” Mr. Atura remarked.
