President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Edward Abambire Bawa as the Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC). The appointment, announced in a statement signed by Callistus Mahama, Ph.D., Secretary to the President, is in line with Article 195(1) of the Constitution and Section 10(2) of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation Act, 1983 (P.N.D.C.L. 64).
The statement clarified that Mr. Bawa’s appointment is pending the required advice from the Honourable Minister for Energy, in consultation with the Public Services Commission. His tenure as Acting CEO officially begins on January 17, 2025.
Dr. Mahama extended the President’s formal congratulations to Mr. Bawa, stating, “I take this opportunity to congratulate you formally on your appointment. Please accept the President’s best wishes.”
Edward Bawa is a prominent figure in Ghana’s political and energy sectors. He previously served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Bongo constituency in the Upper East Region after being elected in the 2016 general elections. However, he lost his bid for re-election in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) primaries on May 13, 2023, to private legal practitioner, Lawyer Charles Bawadua.
