Jonathan Abdallah Salifu, the Upper East Regional Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has explained that while the NDC enjoys a strong majority in Parliament, the extensive pool of skilled and experienced members has led to tough decisions regarding ministerial assignments.

Addressing speculation about the absence of Bolgatanga Central Member of Parliament (MP), Isaac Adongo, from the government’s ministerial appointments during an interview on A1 Radio, Mr. Salifu highlighted the challenges of balancing regional representation with the overwhelming number of qualified candidates within the party. He acknowledged that senior figures like Ato Forson have been appointed to key roles in finance and expressed hope that Mr. Adongo will receive a prominent position in the future.

“Apart from the fact that we have an overwhelming majority, the human resources within the party are equally overwhelming. In the area of Honorable Adongo’s expertise—finance—his senior colleagues, like Ato Forson, have been recognized,” he said.

Mr. Salifu suggested that the Bolgatanga Central MP could potentially serve as a deputy minister, possibly in the Ministry of Finance or Trade, given his extensive experience on these critical parliamentary committees.

“I hope, by God’s grace, he will be included—probably, if not to support Ato in the same ministry, then he could go to a different ministry. He has served on two of the most important committees in Parliament—Trade and Finance. He can go to either as a deputy minister,” he remarked.

“We are hoping and praying that when the second phase of nominations is made, he will be given a role to play in one of these sectors as a deputy minister.”

However, Mr. Salifu cautioned that the regional balance of appointments remains a significant consideration, noting that the Volta Region has already been allocated two extra cabinet positions, intensifying competition for any additional spots.

Despite these challenges, the NDC official emphasized that ministerial roles are not the only platform for impactful leadership. He pointed out that Mr. Adongo’s continued leadership as chairman of the Finance Committee in Parliament is an important role that allows him to serve the people effectively. He also stressed that not every member of the NDC’s large parliamentary group can be appointed to a ministerial position, but many will be recognized in other influential roles, such as serving on various boards.

“There’s no way we’ll have over 100 MPs in Parliament without some being recognized as ministers,” he said.
