Renowned Kologo legend Atongo Zimba has voiced his frustration over the Frafra community’s tendency to prioritize lavish spending on alcohol for young musicians rather than investing in their career development.
Speaking on the Buuri Malema Show, hosted by Moses Apiah, Atongo highlighted the damaging culture that undermines the potential of talented artists.
“In our society, we seem more interested in buying alcoholic drinks worth thousands of cedis for musicians rather than investing that money in their growth. This has destroyed many young talents,” Atongo lamented.
He cited Atimbila, a promising rising star, as a cautionary example, stating, “Our own people messed him up with alcohol and substances, yet they turn around to insult him and others like him. Why do we do this to our own people? The Ashanti man will not do that, nor will the White man, but why us, Frafra people?”
Atongo’s comments shed light on a broader issue: the neglect and lack of structured support for young musicians in the Frafra community. Instead of fostering an environment that nurtures talent, the prevailing culture of indulgence in alcohol and drugs stifles their potential, he observed.
The Buuri Malema Show, which aired this heartfelt conversation, is a Gurune-speaking program dedicated to preserving the rich heritage of the Frafra people. Airing every Wednesday from 8 to 10 PM, the show celebrates traditional music, folktales, and cultural practices while serving as a platform for thought-provoking discussions on social and cultural issues.
Atongo’s passionate plea calls for a collective effort to redirect resources toward the health, growth, and sustainability of musicians, ensuring they achieve their full potential while preserving the cultural pride of the Frafra community.
