“No small babies with sharp teeth” – Dr. Zangina talks about Mahama’s appointments

Dr. Nicholas Zangina, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications team in the Upper East Region, has emphasized that President John Dramani Mahama’s new appointments prioritize experience and industry knowledge in key ministerial positions.

“The president, this time around, means business, and he wants people with industry knowledge and rich experience to lead these ministries. That is why, excuse me to say, no small babies with sharp teeth, as it used to be, are being appointed to these ministerial positions.”

Speaking in an interview on A1 Radio, Dr. Zangina explained that the appointments reflect the president’s determination to implement meaningful change. He highlighted that the focus is on placing seasoned professionals in charge of ministries while younger, emerging leaders are appointed to manage state-owned agencies.

This approach, he believes, will ensure that policies developed by experienced ministers are effectively implemented.

“The ideology this time around is that the big boys should head the ministries to develop policies, and the up-and-coming young ones should manage the agencies so that the policies crafted by the big boys can be implemented by these agencies and state-owned enterprises,” he stated.

Dr. Zangina also acknowledged the urgency with which the president is addressing the country’s economic challenges. While inflation slightly decreased by December 2024, he noted that it remains a significant concern, with rates still hovering around 26 percent.

On regional concerns, particularly in the Volta and Savannah Regions, Dr. Zangina stressed the importance of prioritizing development and job creation over demands for specific individuals to hold ministerial positions. He argued that the focus should be on appointing competent individuals capable of contributing to national progress rather than satisfying regional preferences.

“The point is, as we say, are we in need of development and jobs to advance as a country? Or are we merely seeking to have our own people in ministerial positions, even if they don’t deliver any meaningful or productive output?” he questioned.

Dr. Zangina reaffirmed that the most critical factor in any appointment is the ability to advance the president’s agenda and support the broader objectives of the NDC party. “The most important thing is that whoever is appointed to hold a ministerial position must advance the president’s agenda and, for that matter, the NDC’s vision as a whole.”

He concluded by emphasizing that while not everyone can be appointed to a ministerial or managerial role, the overarching focus should remain on the goal of national development.
