As Donatus Akamugri Atanga, the Upper East Regional Minister-designate, prepares to face Parliament’s Vetting Committee next Tuesday, expectations from residents of the region continue to grow. Among the top priorities outlined by stakeholders are the construction of a regional airport and the restoration of peace in conflict-prone areas such as Bawku.

Celestina Atanga, a member of the NDC communication team in the Upper East Region, has expressed optimism that Mr. Akamugri, if approved, will champion the construction of an airport in the region. Speaking on Bolga FM’s political program, Zina Yela, Madam Celestina highlighted the transformative potential of a regional airport.

“The construction of an airport in the Upper East Region is not only a promise in our party’s manifesto but also a vital step toward opening up the region for development. It will ease the travel burden on residents and attract investments that will spur economic growth. When the airport is constructed, we will no longer need to travel to Tamale to catch a flight; we will fly straight from the region,” she remarked.

Madam Celestina also stressed the importance of prioritizing peacebuilding efforts in Bawku, which has been plagued by recurring conflicts over the years. “Without peace, development cannot thrive. It is crucial that Mr. Akamugri focuses on building bridges and fostering unity in Bawku to create a stable environment for growth,” she added.

On her part, Linda Akupa, a member of the NPP communication team in the region, called on residents to support the minister-designate and refrain from divisive actions that have previously hampered progress.

“It’s time we move past practices like writing petitions for the removal of ministers and appointees. If we truly want development in the Upper East Region, we must embrace unity and work together,” she noted.
