The Chief Executive Officer of Akuafo Nketewa, Dr. Charles Nyaaba, has called on President John Mahama to take immediate steps to recover the $12 million spent on the Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam project by the previous government.

He urged the president to prioritize the revival of the dam’s construction within his first 120 days in office.

Speaking on A1 Radio, Dr. Nyaaba emphasized the critical role the Pwalugu Dam would play in mitigating the devastating effects of floods in northern Ghana.

He cited last year’s dry spell, which resulted in farmers losing nearly 100% of their produce, as evidence of the urgent need for the project.

“This government must do whatever it takes to retrieve the $12 million spent by the previous administration on the Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam. Last year, one of the worst disasters was the drought, where farmers lost almost all their produce. If the dam had been constructed, it would have significantly benefited farmers,” he stressed.

The Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam project was initiated in 2019 under a $993 million contract. It was designed as a hydro-solar hybrid system, incorporating 60 MW of hydropower and 50 MW of solar power.

The dam was also expected to help absorb excess water from the Bagre Dam, reducing perennial flooding and improving irrigation in northern Ghana.

However, the government recently announced its decision to terminate the contract awarded for the dam’s construction. The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, disclosed this during a press briefing after a three-day tour of various departments and agencies under his ministry.

“What we will do is terminate that contract immediately. We’ll cancel the Pwalugu contract, find a contractor, secure funding, and then ensure immediate execution of the project,” he stated.

With these developments, farmers and stakeholders are eagerly awaiting the government’s next steps to ensure the completion of this much-needed infrastructure for the people of northern Ghana.
