Renowned Kologo musician Guy One, popularly known as Junior Jesus, has called for the establishment of a Kologo Training Center in the Upper East Region.
According to him, the two-string instrument, which holds deep cultural significance for the people of the Upper East, is gradually losing its authenticity due to excessive sound modulation and the fusion of modern beats.
Speaking on Buuri Malema, a cultural program hosted by Moses Apiah on Bolga FM 102.7, the Kologo legend lamented that the youth have lost interest in traditional Kologo music in its purest form.
He explained that while blending Kologo with beats may appeal to modern audiences, it compromises the essence of indigenous knowledge and wisdom embedded in the music.
“If you look carefully, you will realize that most of us now mix Kologo with beats to make the music sound good. But is that how Kologo was meant to be?” he questioned.
He further expressed concern that young musicians who claim to play Kologo often rely heavily on digital enhancements rather than mastering the original technique. This, he warned, poses a threat to the survival of Kologo music.
“Most of the Kologo musicians we have now, with their little experience, quickly add beats and think they know how to play Kologo. But who will teach the younger generation the real Kologo?”
To address this, Guy One is advocating for the establishment of a Kologo Training Center to ensure that children and young musicians learn the authentic techniques while experienced musicians are still active.
“That is why I’m advocating for a training center—so that some of us can teach the children how to play real Kologo.”
