Dr. Nicholas Zangina, a member of the Upper East Regional Communications team for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has emphasized the need for a major overhaul of Ghana’s education system, stressing that it must be reengineered to better incorporate technological advancements.
Speaking on A1 Radio, he pointed out that both developed and developing economies place a strong emphasis on fields such as Information and Communication Technology (ICT), science, and engineering—areas he believes Ghana’s education system has yet to fully prioritize.
“You would agree with me that in developed and developing economies, there is a strong focus on ICT, science, and engineering. However, that is not the case with our education system.”
Dr. Zangina highlighted the growing challenge of accommodating the increasing number of Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates admitted into secondary schools each year. Acknowledging the insufficiencies in public school infrastructure, he suggested that private schools play a vital role in supporting the public sector to address this issue. He noted that the public education system alone is unable to adequately cater to the ever-growing number of students.
“For me, I think there is a need for us to expand our free education initiatives and find ways to involve the private sector.”
He explained the NDC’s intention to expand the Free Senior High School (FSHS) initiative introduced by the previous government to include private schools. He argued that partnerships with the private sector could help improve access to quality education while ensuring that both public and private institutions have the necessary infrastructure to support the increasing student population.
“We are doing this because we want to ensure that quality education is maintained. We are doing this to ensure that both public and private educational institutions have the infrastructure to accommodate these growing numbers.”
His remarks come as Ghana hosts a national education forum, bringing together key stakeholders to discuss proposals aimed at improving the country’s education system.
