The National Chairman of the Poultry Farmers Association, George Dasaah, has noted that the President’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) contained important details the poultry industry had long been waiting for. He believes that if these plans are properly implemented, they could bring significant changes to the sector and the economy at large.

Speaking on A1 Radio, he expressed optimism about the president’s speech, highlighting that poultry farming has been a game-changer in other countries. He is hopeful that Ghana could see similar benefits, emphasizing the industry’s potential to contribute substantially to the country’s GDP. He urged the government to develop effective strategies for sustainable growth.

“This is what we in the poultry fraternity have been waiting to hear. In fact, the whole speech, especially the part concerning poultry, is heartwarming. We hope that when it comes to implementation, it will be done well. And I can assure you, it is going to change things in this country.”

However, he also acknowledged that while past governments have introduced favorable initiatives for the poultry sector, poor implementation has often hindered progress. One major issue, according to Mr. Dasaah, has been the lack of involvement of key stakeholders in the poultry value chain. He pointed out that strategies sometimes fail because they are created without proper input from those who understand the industry best.

“Sometimes, we in the value chain are not engaged. Often, technocrats and other officials are brought on board to develop strategies, but in the end, we face problems because our insights are not considered.”

Despite these challenges, Mr. Dasaah expressed confidence in the current Minister of Agriculture, believing that he has the capability to work with the President to implement effective strategies for the poultry sector.

“I have confidence in the current Agric Minister, and I hope he will help the President develop and implement strategies that will benefit this country.”

He commended the President’s intention to gradually reduce poultry imports, noting that Ghana has the capacity and infrastructure, particularly in the northern regions, to boost local production. However, he also emphasized that the cost of production remains high in these areas and suggested that government support, including favorable financial policies, could help alleviate this challenge.

Additionally, he expressed optimism that with the right support, the sector could create opportunities for young people, encouraging them to engage in the industry. He pointed to successful poultry initiatives in other nations and voiced confidence that Ghana could replicate their success with the right commitment and execution.

“If the government does things right, I can assure you it will open opportunities for young people. Other countries have done it, and I believe Ghana can do it too.”
