The Managing Director of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), Yvonne Opare, has commended the Alagumgube Group for their initiative and financial commitment toward the development of the proposed airport in Sumbrungu, located in the Bolgatanga Municipality of the Upper East Region.

Speaking during a visit to the site on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, Madam Opare expressed her appreciation to the group—comprising natives of Bolgatanga residing in New Jersey, USA—for taking the bold step to clear and grade the land for the airport runway.

“I want to take the opportunity to thank the Alagumgube Group, natives of Bolgatanga residing in New Jersey, who have spent their own resources to grade the land and create the path for a runway stretching up to about 2,000 meters. We thank them for taking this initiative,” she said. “This demonstrates a high level of seriousness about the project, and the President also attaches great importance to it. That’s why we are here.”

The Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri Atanga, also praised the group’s efforts, noting that the initial clearing covered 1,400 meters. He explained that upon their request for an extension, the Regional Coordinating Council released machinery from the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP) to support the additional 600 meters needed to complete the 2,000-meter stretch.

“Let me also use this opportunity to thank our brothers, the Alagumgube Group, who initiated and provided resources for the clearing of the tarmac. In fact, when we visited the site the first time, they had already cleared 1,400 meters,” the Minister said. “They appealed to us to extend it to 2,000 meters, and we responded by releasing DRIP equipment to assist them. That’s why you can see the heavy machinery around. They are not being charged for it; however, the fuel costs are being borne by the Alagumgube Group.”

Chairman of the Alagumgube Group, Gabriel Agambila, reaffirmed their commitment to the project, stating, “We believe this airport will open up the Upper East Region for investment and development. This is our home, and we want to contribute meaningfully to its transformation. We are grateful for the support from both the Ghana Airports Company and the Regional Coordinating Council.”

The proposed airport project, when completed, is expected to significantly boost economic activity and improve connectivity in the region.
