Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri Atanga, has reiterated the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government’s commitment to electing Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) on a non-partisan basis. This move aims to strengthen local-level participation and promote political accountability.
To achieve this goal, the government plans to amend Articles 243 and 246(2) of the 1992 Constitution. According to Mr. Akamugri, this amendment will pave the way for the non-partisan election of MMDCEs, ensuring that local governance is more inclusive and reflective of the interests of the citizenry.
Speaking at the confirmation ceremony of the Bolgatanga East District Chief Executive, Mr. Akamugri noted that the election of MMDCEs is one of the key issues being considered by the Constitutional Review Committee, which was recently inaugurated by President John Dramani Mahama. The committee’s mandate is to undertake a comprehensive review of the Constitution to ensure it aligns with the hopes and aspirations of Ghanaians.
According to Mr. Akamugri, the non-partisan election of MMDCEs is expected to enhance grassroots participation by allowing citizens to engage more directly in selecting their leaders.
“To better strengthen local-level participation and political accountability, we are committed to the election of MMDCEs on a non-partisan basis by amending Articles 243 and 246(2) of the 1992 Constitution. It is against this backdrop, and in response to many other concerns, that His Excellency President John Mahama inaugurated the Constitutional Review Committee to undertake a comprehensive review of our Constitution to ensure that it reflects the hopes and aspirations of the citizenry,” he stated.
The Regional Minister also revealed that, as part of the President’s commitment to strengthening local governance and supporting Assembly Members in carrying out their responsibilities effectively, the government has allocated GH¢100 million for the payment of monthly allowances to Assembly Members across the country.
